Virdo Eaton

Virdo “Van” Van Eaton passed away Sept. 1, 2005 at Whidbey General Hospital after a battle with kidney failure.

Mr. Van Eaton was born May 26, 1919 in Canistota, S.D. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Rome, southern and northern France, Rhineland, and air combat in the Balkans. Decorations include the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. Van also served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot. Following his service he joined the Carpenter’s Union and spent six years in Alaska and various places in California.

On August 25, 1968 he married Ruth Daniel in Carson City, Nev. They resided in Santa Rosa, Calif., until 1977 when Van medically retired and went to Portland, Ore. In 1980 Van and Ruth moved to Oak Harbor. They raised llamas for 14 years.

Van enjoyed fishing, gardening, going to the Skagit Speedway races, visiting with all his friends, and was great for telling jokes. He was a member of Puget Sound Anglers, North American Fishing Club, and lifetime member of the VFW Post 7392. He was preceded in death by his mother and father in California.

Van is survived by his former wife Ruth; his loving friend Louise who gave him loving care and much happiness in the past few months; cousins Dick and Nita Sherwood; former sisters-in-law Grace, Elaine and Sharon in Canada; his doggie Dakota, and many friends.

No formal funeral services will be held. Cremation will take place. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the IOOF Temple, 721 SE Barrington, Oak Harbor. Bring your favorite dish for a potluck. Services will be conducted by VFW Post 7392.
