John Richard Wavrunek, 89, died Feb. 1, 2005 at Whidbey Island Manor, Oak Harbor. He was born Sept. 3, 1915 in Algoma, Wisconsin to Frank and Edith (Caldwell) Wavrunek.
John was raised in Wisconsin. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was married to Marie A. McDonald. John and Marie moved to Cleveland, Ohio, Akron, Ind., Chicago and Norwich, Conn. John worked in manufacturing most of his life and retired as production and plant manager for Capital Hardware Company.
John and Marie retired and in 1981, moved to Palm Coast, Florida from Northbrook, Illinois. They were members of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Palm Coast and also the Palm Coast Country Club. Marie died in February of 2001. John moved to Oak Harbor later that same year to be near his daughter.
John became a resident of Oak Harbor Retirement Center. He was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church. John enjoyed crossword puzzles.
John Wavrunek is survived by five children: Sandra Martenson of Oak Harbor, John Richard Wavrunek, Jr. and wife Jackie of Fairhope, Ala., Susan Harper and husband Rich of Edgerton, Wis., Paul Wavrunek of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Mary Kunzer and husband Jim of McHenry, Ill. Eleven grandchildren also survive. John’s wife Marie, three sisters, Jane, Joyce and Betty, and one grandchild preceded him in death.
Funeral Mass for John Wavrunek was celebrated Feb. 4 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, with Rev. Ron Belisle, Celebrant. Cremation was held with private inurnment to follow at Bushnell National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
