Margaret (Marge) Lenore Newell died Jan. 5, 2005, after a brief illness. Born on a farm in Hastings, Neb., May 1, 1916, she graduated from Hastings College, cum laude in 1938. She relocated to Seattle in 1939 where she taught math and German at Denny Junior High in Seattle. In 1964 she received her master’s degree in gifted education from the University of Washington in 1964.
She retired in 1978 on Whidbey Island where she continued her passions as a master woodcarver of NW Native American designs, avid fisherman, inspired cook and poet. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Hugh H. Newell on Whidbey Island and three children, daughter, Diane Tompkinson and sons Roger Newell, wife Nancy and Rick Newell, wife Jan of Seattle. She leaves behind six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1:30 p.m., at Whidbey Evangelical Free Church, 872 Plantation Dr., two miles south of Greenbank. In lieu of flowers a contribution may be made to Planned Parenthood.
Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
