Danilo Oblenida Ochoa

Funeral Mass for Danilo Oblenida “Danny” Ochoa, Sr. was celebrated March 11 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, with the Rev. Ronald Belisle as Celebrant. Rites of Committal followed at Maple Leaf Cemetery.

Full military honors were under the auspices of the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Danilo S. Ochoa, Jr., Floren Apuyan, Ely Dulay, Walter Pyne, Herb Jacobson, Danny Frye, Joe Villamarin and Loren Linscott.

Danny Ochoa was born in Binan, Laguna, Philippines, March 15, 1945, the youngest of six children, to Celestino and Antonia Ochoa. Surrounded by his loving family, Danny died peacefully on March 6, 2003, at Life Care Center of Skagit County in Sedro-Woolley. His wife of 31 years, Lee of Oak Harbor, son Danny and his wife Lexi of Mount Vernon and daughter Lynnie of Lynnwood survive Danny.

Danny grew up in the Philippines were he attended Lake Shore Educational Institution in Binan Laguna. In 1967, he joined the United States Navy, where he served for 20 years as an aviation storekeeper. His first four years in the Navy were spent in Norfolk, Va., during which time he returned to the Philippines for his father’s funeral. Before returning to the U.S. he met Librada Sangalang. They were married on May 19, 1971.

Danny was stationed in San Diego for two years while his wife stayed in the Philippines to teach elementary school. His next tour took him back home to Cubi Point in Subic Bay, Philippines, where his son Danny was born. A year later Danny was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station, Calif., for his next four years. Daughter Lynnie was born while the family was in Lemoore. Danny moved his family to PMRF Barking Sands in Kauai, Hawaii, for four years. His last move would take him to NAS Whidbey Island, where he would retire in 1987. Family and friends will remember Danny as charismatic, fun loving and generous.
