Robert “Bob” Zitek, 89, 10-year resident of Oak Harbor, died July 14, 2004, at Whidbey General Hospital.
Mr. Zitek was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Warroad, Minn., to Frank and Alice Zitek. He married Ella Hovorka June 9, 1934, in Roseau, Minn. The couple moved to Sisters, Ore., in 1937. In 1943 they moved to Redmond, Ore. Bob worked for Tite Knot Lumber in Sisters and Redmond for 20 years. They moved to Crescent, Ore., in 1958, where he and Ella owned and operated the Crescent Tavern and the WOW Drive-in restaurant for several years. They both retired and lived in Redmond, Ore., for two years. In 1994 they moved to Oak Harbor.
Bob loved hunting, fishing, cribbage and pinochle, trips to Reno, being on the board of REA Electric, traveling, snow-birding in Arizona and being with his friends and having family get-togethers.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Ella, in 1997, and by nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by four children, Doug and Larry Zitek, both of Portland, Ore., Marlene Olson of Oak Harbor and Van Zitek of Lake Oswego, Ore.; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Bob loved his family and church. He always said his biggest catch was his wife, Ella, but his second biggest catch was a 13 pound 10 ounce German Brown trout in Wickiup Reservoir.
A memorial Mass will be Monday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Rev. Robert Rimes, S.J., Celebrant. Private inurnment will take place at a later date in Redmond, Ore. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th Ave. N.E., Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125. Arrangements and cremation under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
