John N. Rains

John N. Rains, 66, of Anacortes, Wash., died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, Wash. He was born Aug. 10, 1948, in Evanston, Ill., the son of Noble and Ethel (Bolund) Rains.

John served in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam era and reached chief within eight years of his enlistment. He then became a commissioned officer, reaching Lt. Commander as a maintenance officer for the A-6 aircraft. After 24 years of service, he retired. Following retirement from the Navy, John got his teaching certificate and taught at Secret Harbor School for eight years.

John and Terri Schroeder were united in marriage and they eventually became foster parents for medically intensive children for 14 years. The most important thing in John’s life was his family. He loved them dearly and always supported and celebrated their life events.

John enjoyed football and baseball and was an umpire for Little League.

He will be missed greatly.

John is survived by his wife, Terri; sons and daughters-in-law, Alexander and Laura Rains, Michael and Stacy Noel, and James and Amber Rains; Andrew Rains; daughters Katie Rains and Vicky Rains; and grandchildren Camden, Hailey, Emma, Dakota, Ian and soon-to-be Cleo.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at Fernhill Cemetery in Anacortes. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at Summit Park Bible Church in Anacortes. Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, and the San Juan Islands.
