Lucile H. Owens, 89, died peacefully in her sleep May 22, 2002. She was born Vinita Lucile Hunter, Oct. 14, 1912, near Littleton, Ind., to Sinclair and Effie Carpenter Hunter. She was the third of six children. When she was nine-years-old the Hunters moved to Bell City, Mo., where she was Bell City High School’s star athlete. She graduated high school as valedictorian in 1930. They moved to Rupert, Idaho, in 1931.

She met Houston Owens at the local Saturday night dance in November 1932. They rented farms in Rupert and Twin Falls, Idaho, and in 1948 bought a farm in Murtaugh, Idaho. After the death of their daughter Sydney Alice in 1951, they sold the farm and moved to Porterville, Calif., where Lucile worked as a salesperson in a large department store. In 1952 they bought a 600-acre ranch near Sisters, Ore. They sold the ranch and moved to Prineville, Ore., in 1957 where they built a home and enjoyed a very productive garden. She became a nurse and worked in the emergency room and surgical departments until she retired in 1977. While retired, they continued to garden, travel, and were very active in the Church of Christ. In 1998 they moved to an assisted living facility in Oak Harbor, close to their son Albert Lloyd.

She is preceded in death by her brothers, Albert and Omer; sisters, Mary and Dorothy; her husband Houston; and her daughter Sydney. She is survived by her sister Olive Hunter of Lyons, Ind.; her son Albert; three grandchildren, Kevin, Regina and Darryl; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial will be held Saturday, June 1, at Summer Hill, 165 SW 6th Ave., Oak Harbor at 1:30 p.m. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, Twin Falls, Idaho. Memorials can be made to the “We Care Ministries,” 3201 N 7th St., West Monroe, LA, 71291.
