The Coupeville volleyball team looks good in pink, and what looks even better is a check in the “win” column.

The Wolves edged Sultan 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-10) last Thursday, two days after losing 3-0 at South Whidbey.

Against Sultan (1-10, 2-10), the Wolves, in pink uniforms, sponsored their Dig Pink Night in honor of breast cancer awareness.

Inspired by the supportive crowd and the thoughts of a Coupeville administrator and a player’s mom who are breast cancer survivors, the Wolves pulled out the hard-fought win.

“The crowd was great,” Coach Toni Crebbin said. “It drove the girls; there was a lot of enthusiasm.”

Megan Oakes finished with 36 assists and four aces; Hailey Hammer had 16 kills and two blocks; Bree Messner collected seven kills and two aces; and Bessie Walstad had six kills and two blocks. South Whidbey (4-6, 4-7) defeated Coupeville 25-15, 25-17, 26-24.

Crebbin said serve receive “was again our nemesis” and “we need to learn how to hold on to leads.” The Wolves led 17-11 in the third game before falling.

Walstad had 13 digs and eight kills; Hammer recorded 13 kills; and Breeanna Messner “had a solid night,” Crebbin said.

Coupeville (2-9, 3-9) hosts Granite Falls (3-8) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18.
