Coupeville Lions are gearing up for the club’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Starting this week, club members are busy setting up what’s advertised as the “biggest and best” garage sale.

The sale is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 29 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30.

The sale is held each June at Coupeville Elementary School.

There’s something for everyone at the once-a-year sale.

Members collect items all year, filling four barns each year.

“There are 25 sections we set up for display,” said Julian Sayres, project co-chair.

While the sale only lasts a weekend, the club is working on the project year-round.

Members collect items including furniture, toys, Christmas items, kitchen tools, jewelry and more.

Historically the sale nets the club between $30,000 to $40,000 each year.

All funds go back into the community through Lions’ charitable projects.

Some items Sayres said might be pretty popular are tools and furniture.

“The power tools this year are in pretty good shape,” he said. “There’s also a nice entertainment center.”

There’s also a lot of collectibles and jewelry.

The massive sale takes many days to set up and a lot of manpower.

“Overall we’ll have well over 100 volunteers,” Sayres said. “And not all of them are Lions.”

Other groups from the community come to help including boy scouts, high school groups and also private citizens who like to help.

“It’s an awful lot of work by an awful lot of people, but we have fun doing it,” Sayres said.

The day prior to the sale, Lions welcome the community to come preview items.

The preview is noon to 6 p.m. Friday, June 28.

The sale starts right at 9 a.m. Saturday and people line up to get items they found the day before.

“When the air horn sounds and that rope drops, you got to get out of the way,” Sayres said.

On Sunday, any items not already sold will be marked down to half price.

Any items not sold will either go to local thrift stores or members will attempt to sell items online.
