Retired Navy Capt. John Michael McNabb, 68, died Sunday, April 24, in a Virginia hospital. A native of Midlothian, Va., he served on active duty from 1960 to 1985. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1960 and earned his Navy wings in 1961. He served operational tours of duty as a carrier pilot with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 33; VA-45 at NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Fla., and NAS Oceana-based A6 squadrons, VA-42, VX-5 Det Oceana, VA-35, VA-75 and as commanding officer of VA 34. His final flying assignment was as commanding officer of VA-128 based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
Aircraft carrier deployments were made during his career on the USS Lake Champlain, USS Saratoga and the USS America. His last assignment was in service with the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. He retired from active duty in January 1985.
After retirement from the Navy, he was employed as the local manager of DELEX Systems, followed by several years of service as a middle school math and science teacher with the Virginia Beach school system. In recent years, he was actively involved in volunteer service with Mended Hearts and Medical Assistance Program.
Capt. McNabb was a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif. He also earned master’s degrees in public administration from George Washington University and in education from Old Dominion University.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Jean and two daughters, Elizabeth Ann McNabb of Virginia Beach and Katherine Ann McNabb-Kirk, her husband David Kirk and a grandson Michael Kirk of Potomac Falls; two sisters, Margaret Jensen and her husband Dick Jensen of Largo, Fla., and Mary Ann Walton and her husband Gene of Powhatan, Va.
A funeral was April 28 at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Virginia Beach, Va. Burial followed at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
