An act of sportsmanship by Klahowya Secondary School girls tennis coach Bruce Pemberton helped Coupeville take two matches from the Eagles in Silverdale Thursday, April 30.
Coupeville won both ends of the rare tennis double header, winning 6-1 and 5-2 to run its win streak to eight matches.
When the two schools met in Coupeville April 21, rain stopped the match after the first sets were played. The coaches agreed to take up where those matches left off when the schools were scheduled to meet again and then play the regularly schedule match after.
When the Wolves traveled to Silverdale for the rematch Thursday, two of the girls who played in the first match were not available. Rather than make Coupeville forfeit those matches, Pemberton suggested they start over with new opponents.
The schools played single pro sets in the double header to speed things up.
Coupeville won all but third singles in the opening contest.
In first and second singles, Jacki Ginnings won 8-4 and Valen Trujillo won 8-3.
The Wolves swept the doubles: 1, Payton Aparicio/Sydney Autio won 8-2; 2, McKenzie Bailey/Wynter Thorne won 8-3; 3, Ivy Luvera/Jazmine Franklin won 8-1; and 4, McKenzie Meyer/Bree Daigneault won 8-1.
Ana Luvera fell in third singles 8-4.
In the second match, Klahowya prevailed in first singles and first doubles.
Trujillo (8-1) was victorious in second singles.
Bailey/Franklin (8-2), Ivy Luvera/Haleigh Deasy (9-7) and Ana Luvera/Daigneault (8-0) took the second through fourth doubles matches.
Ginnings dropped first singles 8-3, and Aparicio and Autio lost in first doubles 8-4.
“It was a fun day, winning two,” coach Ken Stange said. “I’ve never been a part of a tennis doubleheader at CHS.”
The Wolves upped their record to 4-0 in league play, 9-3 overall. They will attempt to close out conference play undefeated when they face Chimacum twice next week. The teams meet in Coupeville at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 4, and at 3 p.m. in Chimacum Thursday, May 7.
Coupeville goes to Sequim for a 3:30 p.m. nonleague match Tuesday, May 5.
