Students in Janet Sodano’s second- and third-grade class at Olympic View Elementary held a book signing last week to celebrate a special class project.

The students just published a book titled “Clouds Imagination in the Sky.” Sodano said the inspiration from the book came from “The Squiggle,” which the students read together last year. In the story, the main character sees a string on the ground and imagines it to be all sorts of things.

The students’ story is about how people can look in the sky and use their imagination to see many things. The children each drew a picture of a cloud and accompanied it with a poem. The students learned studied poetry in one of their many writing units this year and learned about clouds during a science lession.

Sodano said it took several sessions of afternoon writing workshops and several revisions and drafts to complete the final draft of the book.

“Over the course of the project, students learned a great deal about what it means to be an author including having a strong idea to guide the writing, writing for a particular audience or purpose, the importance of editing and revision in the final draft and last, but certainly not least, the feeling of pride that comes with accomplishing something that is truly meaningful to you,” she said.

The book signing was attended by friends and family as well as Principal Martha Adams, Superintendent Rick Schulte and Oak Harbor School Board member Peter Hunt.
