A familiar storefront in historic downtown Oak Harbor has changed its name, shuffled ownership and brought in new inventory.

But three familiar faces will remain behind the counter.

Red’s Boutique is the new name for Wild Magnolia. Last week, Lonnie Schopen took over as the store’s owner.

The Wild Magnolia line of products, however, are remaining as are Sandy Merriman and Brenda Pike, the previous owners.

Merriman and Pike are scaling back their time commitment while still serving the customers who got them into the business five years ago.

“It’s three women who have a dream and love people,” said Schopen. “We’re mostly about making people happy and making people smile.”

The red-haired Schopen is the “Red” behind the newly named gift boutique, which features an assortment of unique home decor items, baby products, jewelry, art, women’s clothing and men’s accessories, among other things.

The store is expanding its women’s clothing lines, including plus sizes.

“That’s my goal: fashion, affordability, color for everybody,” Schopen said.

“We try to reach everyone.”

Merriman and Pike started operating the Pioneer Way store as partners five years ago and began renting space to Schopen last year to feature some of the clothing lines she sells.

It appeared the business  might close in the spring after Pike announced her plans to retire. However, the three women put their heads together and came up with a plan to keep the store open seven days a week.

Schopen is now sole proprietor, allowing Merriman and Pike to work part-time.

“We’re kind of reversing roles with Lonnie,” Merriman said.

“Essentially, it allows us to be able to spend more time with family and still be involved.”

Some of the brands that have attracted customers to Wild Magnolia, including Tagua jewelry, Tea Forte and Michel Design Works, will remain available in the store.

The store, located at 851 S.E. Pioneer Way, also sells a variety of Whidbey Island products, including Pike’s photography.

It also offers a layaway plan to assist customers.

Schopen formerly owned Lalonnie’s Notions, a gift boutique, across the street.

Sandy Willmett, owner of Baby N Me on Pioneer Way, said she is glad to see Wild Magnolia morphing into Red’s Boutique and not shutting down.

Willmett stopped by the store last week. She was wearing a maxi dress she purchased there.

“It does not bode well to have store front after store front be empty down here,” Willmett said.
