Oak Harbor coach Mike Crebbin described the Lake Stevens High School wrestlers as being the top team in the state and probably one of the top teams in the Pacific Northwest.
In Oak Harbor’s final home wrestling match of the season Thursday evening, the Vikings lived up to their top billing and defeated the Wildcats 57-10.
The Wildcats managed to win just two bouts in the match.
At 215 pounds, Brian Howard, wrestling in just his second bout since returning to competition after being out of action due to a shoulder injury, pinned Kody Dinh at the 37-second mark of the second period.
Cory Trimbur, at 103 pounds, was the other Wildcat winner, earning a 9-1 major decision victory over Lake Stevens’ Dakota Reynolds.
Coming off the injury, Howard said his shoulder felt amazing.
“I went through physical training for about a month and came out with all I had. It’s great to be back,” he said.
The talented Viking team recorded six victories via pinfall in the match, along with one by technical fall victory and another by major decision.
“They’re fundamentally sound wrestlers,” Crebbin said. “They don’t do anything flashy, they just come right at you. They have great motion and great position, and they just beat you with solid wrestling.”
Oak Harbor’s next test on the mat is the divisional tournament at Marysville-Pilchuck on Friday, Feb. 6.
