It was a giant of a contest at Saturday’s Harvest Festival in Coupeville, and the results from the 17th annual Whidbey Island Giant Pumpkin Contest are in.

The sun peeked through now and then as contestants’ pumpkins were lined up and hoisted onto a scale.

South Whidbey was represented with the third place winner of the giant pumpkin contest, as well as the winner of the ugliest giant pumpkin, won by Christyn Johnson of Clinton with her 244-pound entry.

Second place, at 488 pounds, was awarded to Phil Renninger of Coupeville, and Lee Roof also of Coupeville won at 714 pounds.

Neal Amtmann of Coupeville won the prettiest pumpkin contest.

The Oak Harbor Children’s Garden won first place in the pumpkin junior category for their 186 pounder and Eden Wilcox of Oak Harbor won second place at 114 pounds.

The winners of the zucchini contest were Peter Case-Smith of Oak Harbor with another giant of 20.1 pounds and Randy Phiesfeld of Coupeville won second with 15.4 pounds.

The organizers of the contest thank the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival Association for its support of the contest. Plans are underway for 2013 and anyone wishing to receive free giant pumpkin seeds may contact Lee Roof at 360-632-6648.
