It was interesting to read that Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen’s challenger dismisses the senator as a supporter of NAS Whidbey Island because she has never seen her there.

Guess what? I have not seen the challenger at all of the events I have attended but obviously physical presence does not define meaningful support. Haugen may not attend the same functions at the same time as her challenger, but she is a strong supporter as evident in her actions, proven through laws and additions to the state budget.

She ensured Economic Development Funds for Military Communities in the 1993 budget, plus over $650,000 committed for protecting the base encroachment in 2007, to name just two. Haugen also has had a close personal connection to NAS Whidbey. Her brother, Howard Olsen, a data systems control officer, retired in 1989 as the highest-ranking civilian after 30 years of service. Also, check on the number of official letters of support from the senator that are on file at the Pentagon.

Sen. Haugen has worked tirelessly for NASWI and for our district from the youth to senior citizens.

The 10th District cannot afford to not re-elect Sen. Haugen especially in these dire financial times. Her knowledge, institutional network and legislative abilities are irreplaceable for the district and the state so as to best weather this “bow wave” from the federal level. Vote for Sen. Haugen Nov. 4.
