Watch out Northwest A/B.
That’s the message Coupeville hoped it sent the rest of the league Tuesday with its 69-43 blowout of previously unbeaten Mount Vernon Christian.
“We just came out ready to play tonight,†CHS senior Mike Bagby said. “It was our first league game and we had to make a statement.â€
It’s safe to say CHS did just that.
The Wolves hit an impressive 27-of-48 (56 percent) of their shots and never trailed against a solid 3-0 Hurricane team.
“I think the kids were having fun — I was having fun,†CHS head coach Randy King said of the performance.
Coupeville generated its offense early and often, hitting its first five attempts. And they weren’t just layups. After an inside bucket from 6-foot-6 sophomore post Brian Miller, Bagby hit two mid-range jump shots, junior Casey Larson connected on another and sophomore Kramer O’Keefe drained a three pointer.
“We were a lot more patient with our shots tonight,†King said. “They weren’t necessarily forced up and were not too quick.â€
The offensive explosion provided an 11-4 lead just two minutes into the game and the Wolves just built from there.
A large part of Coupeville’s success came from a tenacious full-court press that forced the Hurricanes to scramble from the get-go. Although the Wolves only forced the Hurricanes into 13 turnovers, the press caused several hurried MVC shots and an out-of-sync offense.
“That’s what we’re going to try and do to everybody…we’ve got a bunch of runners this year,†senior guard J.J. Marti said.
Coupeville maintained a 40-19 lead at halftime and held a 53-37 advantage at the end of the third quarter. The 16 point difference at the end of the third was as close at the Hurricanes got as CHS continued to knock down shots through the final quarter.
Bagby ended the game-high scorer with 22 points, also adding 10 rebounds. Larson scored 14, while Marti, who missed the first three games with a broken thumb, had 13.
Asked if he thought CHS could continue what it did on Tuesday, Marti thought this was only the beginning, alluding to the team goal of reaching the state tournament.
“If we work as a team from now on and play team ball we should be good,†he said.
Coupeville is 1-0 in the Northwest A/B and 3-3 overall. Mount Vernon Christian dropped to 2-1 in league and 3-1 overall.
The Wolves played last night at Darrington and return to action at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20 at home against 2A Chimacum.
