Girls take second on home course

With end of the season tournaments approaching, there’s no better time to begin to heat up.

With end of the season tournaments approaching, there’s no better time to begin to heat up.

That’s exactly what the Oak Harbor girls golf team has done over the past couple of weeks, most recently taking second in a three-team meet with Burlington-Edison and Stanwood on Monday.

The Wildcats earned 142 Stabbleford points, just behind Burlington (153) and ahead of Stanwood (127).

Number one and two golfers were the only to finish a full 18 holes. Chelsea Gronbach scored 31 points at the number one position and Kristi Gavigan had 34 at the number two spot.

Gavigan struggled a bit on the front nine, but picked it up on the back to score 20 points.

“I was very pleased to see that from Kristi,” head coach Andy Wesley said.

Perhaps the most impressive Oak Harbor performance of the day came from Brittany Loveng, who scored a team-high 38 points on just 13 holes.

She scored 27 of those on the front nine, which is a team high this year.

“If she can put scores together like that at districts she will be on way to state,” Wesley said. “She has really improved as a player in the last two and a half months.”

Krystal Cooley (24) and Christina Carter (15) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats.

Burlington’s Melissa Loving led all scorers with 51 points.

The Wildcats will begin the first round of the WesCo North A division tournament tomorrow, May 12 at Battle Creek Golf Course in Lake Stevens.
