Pheasant site re-opens for hunting
The Whidbey Island pheasant-release site adjacent a Navy air base that had been closed to hunting following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will open for hunting Nov. 10, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced on Nov. 2.
Outlying Field, Coupeville, pheasant release site, part of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, will be open for hunting through Nov. 30, said Mick Cope, WDFW upland game manager.
Cope said hunters are required to use non-toxic shot at the Coupeville site, and must have a NASWI hunting permit from air station security before hunting. Base permit information is available at 257-3122.
The Seaplane Base pheasant-release site, also part of NASWI, remains closed because of security concerns. Cope said it’s unlikely that any additional sites would open this year.

College notes
Chalise Baysa, Oak Harbor ‘98, moved to the top spot on the University of Oregon’s women’s soccer all-time points list with two goals in the Ducks’ 5-0 victory over Eastern Washington in September. Baysa, a four-year starter at Oregon, also holds the school record for most career goals. For her efforts the senior forward was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week on Oct. 1.
Joe Donnellon earns 2nd team All-Conference. Donnellon, a Coupeville graduate of ’00 and the No. 1 runner for Lewis-Clark State College, took 19th place this past Saturday at the NAIA Region I Cross Country Championships. The Warriors of Lewis-Clark State took fifth overall and just missed an at-large bid to the NAIA National Meet. Joe’s time was 25:34 for five miles – a personal best at 5:08 per mile.

Crabbing update
Crab fishing in the southern portion of Marine Area 8-2 (Everett/Port Susan) re-opened to sport crab fishing Nov. 5.
Fishing for Dungeness and red rock crab will be open seven days a week until further notice. The area opened is south and east of a line that extends from Camano Head to Sandy Point located south of Langley. This includes Glendale, Port Gardner, Everett, Tulalip Bay and Port Susan, including Kayak County Park.
All other marine areas are currently open to sports crab fishing seven days a week with a daily limit of six male Dungeness crab (6.25-inch minimum size) and six red rock crab (5-inch minimum).

2001 Seattle Marathon nears
The 32nd annual Seattle Marathon is scheduled to be held on Nov. 25. The marathon will benefit the Candlighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Western Washington. The Candlighters mission is to educate, support, serve, and advocate for children with cancer, their famalies, and the professionals who care for them.

Registration for youth basketball
A youth basketball clinic and registration for the upcoming 2001-2002 youth league will be held Saturday, Dec. 8 for boys and girls grades 3 through 6. Basketball coaches needed

Boating Safety Advisory Council
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission announced that it is seeking nominations to its Boating Safety Advisory Council. The deadline for submitting nominations is Nov. 9, 2001.
The council assists and advises the commission on administration of its boating safety program, which provides information and education on environmentally safe boating practices to agencies, organizations and individuals statewide. The program also works closely with local law enforcement agencies, U.S. Power Squadrons, U.S. Coast Guard Auxilary and other boating safety educational organizations to assist their information, education and/or law enforcement efforts. Council members may be reimbursed for travel and other expenses when attending council meetings. Typically there are two to three meetings a year. Appointments will include representation of (with 1 member each):
Manually powered watercraft
U.S. power squadrons
Washington Association of County Officials
Whitewater kayaking

Turkey shoot to benefit WAIF
The Central Whidbey Sportsmen’s Association will hold a Turkey Shoot on Nov. 17 to benefit Whidbey Animals Improvement Foundation.
The shoot will be held from 9 to 1 p.m. at the club range. Entry will be by purchasing four tickets for $5. One ticket will be used to enter or re-enter each event. Entrants may compete as many times as they like.
The public is welcome to this match, which will be held under covered shooting positions. Turkeys will be awarded at the end of the event at 1 p.m.
The club house and range is located south of Coupeville on Safari Road, just south of the corner of Highway 20 and Morris Road.
Events will consist of:
1.Pistol or revolver, any sight, fired offhand at 25 yard bullseye target. Highest 2 scores win a turkey.
2.Pistol or revolver, iron sights only, at briquettes at 25 feet. Best 2 shooters win a turkey.
3.Shotgun at turkey target, 25 yards, 2 shots. Most pellets in white center wins. Highest 2 scores win a turkey.
4.Pistol or revolver, iron sights, at Jug Head target at 25 yeards. Most rounds in bottle per target without hitting the Jug Head winsa turkey. 2 turkeys to be awarded.
5.Shotgun shooting on the Trap Range, games to be announced, so bring your shotgun, with low base loads only, any gauge, and shoot for turkeys.
Any shoot-offs as needed will be held at 12:30 P.M. Anyone wishing to participate who does not own a firearm will be supplied with a .22 pistol and ammunition. The net proceeds will bo to the Whidbey Animals Improvement Foundation.
The public is always welcome at CWSA events, membership is not required.
