Lady Wolves stay winless with 2-0 loss

Axtman scores first-half goals for Sultan

Sultan got off to a fast start in Tuesday’s soccer match against Coupeville, taking a 2-0 lead after the first half of action. That was all the scoring the Lady Turks would need to defeat the Lady Wolves.

Tawnya Axtman was a one-girl wrecking crew for the Lady Turks, scoring the first goal at the 17:05 mark and making the count 2-0 with 8:30 remaining.

“That girl got by us twice, she’s very fast,” coach Kim Sherman said at halftime. “We’re going to fix that right now and be ready for them. That’s pretty much all the offense they put together. Throw the ball and she runs fast after it. The first time she took it and ran on by and we just stood there.”

Coupeville had just one reserve player available to begin the match and when sophomore Hannah Merrill was injured, the Lady Wolves were without a replacement.

“I got headed in the first half, but hopefully I’ll be able to get back in,” she said.

Hannah got hit in the mouth and she spent part of the first half sucking on ice chips attempting to get the bleeding stopped.

In the second half Coupeville’s defense took Sherman’s advice and really stepped things up, holding the Sultan girls scoreless.

Coupeville goal keeper Alyssa Kelley made several good saves and defenders Caitlin Phillips along with sweeper Kim Kisch held the Lady Turks at bay.

Coupeville, 0-3 in Cascade League play and 0-5 overall, hosts Kings on Tuesday.
