“A 14-year-old Oak Harbor boy pleaded not guilty Aug. 18 to a charge that he raped a preschooler.The teen-ager was charged with the first-degree rape of a child Aug. 4 in Island County Superior Court. According to charging information, the teen-aged boy is accused of having sexual intercourse with the 4-year-old victim.If convicted of the charge, the boy would face a standard sentence range of three months and three weeks to nine months in a juvenile institution. Under state law, the maximum sentence would be confinement until he turns 21 years old. But to receive the maximum sentence, the court would have to find evidence for a rare exceptional sentence.According to court papers, the boy’s father is in the Navy and has orders to move to Florida, but the court ordered that the teenager must remain in the state until the case is resolved.Island County Superior Court Judge Vickie Churchill issued a $10,000 bench warrant on the boy Aug. 10.At a Aug. 14 hearing, Churchill ordered that the teenager be held in detention in lieu of a $1,500 bond. His parents posted the bond the next day. As conditions of his release, the teenager must have 24-hour supervision by a parent and can have no unsupervised contact with children more than two years younger than he is.The boy’s trial is set for Oct. 12.The News-Times’ policy is not to release the name of a juvenile charged with a crime unless he or she is convicted. “
