The Klahowya volleyball team found heavier resistance than it most likely expected at Coupeville Monday, Oct. 27.
The one-win Wolves fell 3-0 on Senior Night but left a mark on the undefeated and ninth-ranked Eagles (5-0, 13-0), who had to work for a 25-18, 25-23, 26-24 win.
“We played really well,” Wolves’ coach Breanne Smedley said, “and fought for every point.”
The trend was set early as Coupeville scrapped its way back into the first game after the Eagles threatened to pull away.
The Wolves cut a sizable Eagle lead to 22-18 before Klahowya finished with a 3-0 run.
Coupeville took an 8-3 lead in the second game. The Eagles evened the score at 15 and then moved to a 22-18 lead. The Wolves refused to fold, went on 5-1 run and tied the game at 23.
An Eagle kill and Coupeville passing error finished the set.
The third game was similar to the second. The Wolves produced another early lead (5-0), fell behind (11-7) and then recovered. This time Coupeville went up 21-17 and then held set point at 24-22 but couldn’t finish off the Eagles.
Madeline Strasburg led the Coupeville offense with seven kills and three aces. Kacie Kiel collected five kills, and Lauren Rose had 18 assists.
On defense, Valen Trujillo had 17 digs and Kiel 12.
Coupeville (1-3, 1-9) and Port Townsend (1-3, 7-5) play twice this week with a playoff berth on the line.
The two teams are tied for the third and final district spot.
The first match is in Port Townsend at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28; the teams meet at 5 p.m. in Coupeville Thursday, Oct. 30.
