The start of the season took longer than anticipated, but there was no slow start for the Oak Harbor wrestling team when they finally got a chance to hit the mat.
After having last week’s season-opener against Ferndale delayed, the Wildcats rolled over 3A Anacortes, 60-18, in their first official match Tuesday night.
“The kids wrestled really well,” OHHS head coach Brian Farmer said. “There was a lot of pins and a lot of tough matches.”
Oak Harbor jumped out of the gate quickly with its first three wrestlers pinning opponents in the first round.
Robert Lemme (119) started the evening off with a pin of Spencer Andrich 1:17 into the first. David Wasicanin (125) followed with a pin over Ian Mackay at the 1:10 mark and Josh Stratton (130) pinned Derek Holstad at 1:09.
The Wildcats gathered four more pins on the evening from Chris Wichers (140), Jefferson Miller (152), Daniel Varn (275) and Karlson Miller (112).
Highlights on the evening came from David Marriott’s 5-4 decision over his opponent at 135 pounds, along with Wicher’s pin over Patrick Simpson and Jeff Lang’s 7-4 decision over Jesse Simpson at 145 pounds.
“Both Chris (Wichers) and Jeff (Lang) wrestled really well against their toughest competition,” Farmer said.
Others gaining wins on the night were Mike Poggie (160) via injury default and Dan Davidson (103) by forfeit.
“It was a good first match, but matches are going to get a lot tougher from now on,” Farmer said.
Oak Harbor started a varsity tournament at Blaine yesterday that continues at 10 a.m., today, Dec. 11. The Wildcats then start their league season on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at home against undefeated Snohomish. Junior varsity begins at 5:45 p.m., followed by varsity at 7 p.m.
