A rough season ended in an appropriately rough fashion for the Coupeville football team on Thursday night.

The Wolves dropped their last game of the season, 30-7, at La Conner, placing them at a final mark of 1-6 in the Northwest A/B and 2-8 overall.

“The kids played hard and finished the season hard,” head coach Ron Bagby said. “We were just too banged up and beat up.”

Despite coming in a heavy underdog, CHS remained in Thursday’s contest for most of the first half.

After allowing the Braves to score on their first drive of the game, Coupeville laid the clamps down defensively the remainder of the half.

“After that (first drive) we shut them out,” Bagby said. “We really had the momentum.”

Coupeville tied the score 7-7 on its first drive of the second quarter. Junior quarterback Mike Bagby capped off a long drive, scoring from one yard out on a play action roll out.

The ensuing kickoff, however, was the breaking point for the Wolves.

La Conner returned the ball straight up the middle of the field 80 yards for a touchdown, forcing the Wolves to come from behind once again.

“That just takes the wind right out of your sails,” Bagby said.

La Conner tacked on a field goal before the first half expired, giving them a 17-7 lead.

Still in the contest, Coupeville struggled to get its offense moving in the second half.

“The third quarter they really stiffened it up on defense,” Bagby said.

The victory clinched second place for the Braves (5-2, 6-3), who earned a preliminary state playoff game next weekend at Onalaska.
