McTeacher’s Night: 4:30-7:30 p.m., teachers and staff of Oak Harbor middle schools will be working on the front lines at McDonald’s with the restaurant’s crews. Schools will receive 20 percent of the proceeds taken in that night. It will be a great opportunity to meet teachers and for students to give orders to their teachers.

Fashion show and luncheon: 12:30 p.m., Captain’s Galley, 10 Front St., Coupeville. Fashions presented by: A Touch of Dutch, Brenda’s Gift Shoppe, Collections, One More Thing, Tartan and Tweeds. Five gift baskets will be raffled. $20 tickets are available at participating merchants. Red Cross will get $5 from each ticket sold.

Holiday Home Tour: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., tour six homes in Central Whidbey — four of the homes date from the 19th century. Refreshments will be served and Victorian holiday singers will entertain. Tickets will be available at Island County Historical Society Museum near Coupeville’s wharf. This is Island County Historical Society’s ninth home tour; funds raised will benefit the museum. TUESDAY, NOV. 20

Seeking Right Whales: Slide presentation at Trinity Lutheran Church, Freeland. Candice Emmons, a researcher with Center for Whale Research, is doing work on Right whales for the New England Aquarium. Right whales are the rarest of the world’s large whales. The New England Aquarium’s project is the first and most extensive continuous study of this mammal.

Join Orca Conservancy’s Orca Network for an evening slide presentation on work being done to study and protect Right Whales in New England. Candice Emmons, researcher with San Juan Island’s Center for Whale Research since 1996, is now in her third year conducting Right Whale work for the New England Aquarium. A team of Aquarium researchers seek to identify distribution, behavior and migration patterns, and study genetics, reproductive rates and causes of mortality. There will also be an update on the latest news about Puget Sound orcas, including the two new calves born to K and L pods. Admission is free, though donations are accepted to support the Orca Network whale sighting network. Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program: Enrollment openings are in free preschool program. Classes are held in elementary schools in Oak Harbor, Coupeville and Langley. ECEAP is a comprehensive preschool program for families who want to be involved in their children’s education. Full transportation on school districts’ buses are provided for all students. To be eligible for ECEAP children must turn 3 or 4 years of age by Aug. 31, 2001, and be below federal low-income guidelines. Application deadline: For Master Gardener training held Tuesdays and Thursdays Jan. 22-Feb. 26. Training will be in Anacortes from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.; carpooling will be available. Candidates are given 66 hours of free training. In return, graduates must perform 85 hours of community service in the next 2 years. Community service could be helping at plant clinics, working in the Cooperative Extension office, speaking to groups, working on displays, making house calls and helping with seminars. “Stella Luna:” 2:30 p.m., Oak Harbor Library. Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre present the tale of Stella Luna with a combination of storytelling and puppetry. Stella Luna is a small bat who falls into a nest of birds. She is adopted by the mother bird and creates havoc in the nest as she teaches the baby birds to hang upside down. “The Singing Bird,” an African tale, will also be produced. Children from the audience will be costumed on the spot to play characters in the story. The king is thirsty and sends his servant to the river to bring him water. The servant discovers a singing bird and forgets to return. Evenually, the entire household is dancing at the river. Part of National Children’s Book Week is funded by Friends of Oak Harbor Library.

“The Toad Prince”: 7 p.m., Coupeville Elementary School Multipurpose Room. Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre present “The Toad Prince,” an Asian version of Beauty and the Beast. Part of National Children’s Book Week, all the color and spectacle of Chinese puppet theater includes a magnificent dragon. Trapped in the body of a toad, Indri longs to become a man but the change will occur only if he lives in the presence of virtue for nine days. Who can help him? All ages are welcome to the performance. Funded by Friends of the Coupeville Library, Coupeville Festival Association, Coupeville Elementary School PTA and Sno-Isle Regional Library Multicultural Fund.

Panelists can be anyone who has been affected by driving under the influence (DUI) — friends or family members of someone injured or killed in a DUI crash, EMT, ER nurse or doctor, patrol officer, coroner, therapist, or attorney.
