Going to the dogs: Animal Control fails its duty

Saturday, Dec. 2, at around 11 a.m. I was in the drive-through at Jack in the Box and noticed a long haired black lab running around the corner there.

As you all know that is a very busy road. I parked my car and attempted to call the dog to me so I could see if he had tags on. Then I could call an owner. The dog had on a bandana but no tags and I could not get the dog close enough to me to take it to WAIF.

My next step was to call Animal Control. I called them but to my dismay I got an answering machine. I left a message for them telling them about the dog and left my phone number as well. I never received a call back.

I was appalled that our tax dollars do not pay for better service. There is no one on duty to answer the call. Animal Control should be a better service. There should be someone on duty to answer the calls and dispatch someone to the problem. I don’t know if they ever picked up the dog or not, but for the dog’s sake I hope they did.

This is something that needs to change. Animal Control for the island should be more than an answering machine. Thank you for your time.
