Two comebacks highlighted Coupeville’s 3-2 loss in tennis to Overlake in Redmond Friday, Sept. 9.

The Wolves’ doubles teams of William Nelson and Joey Lippo and Jimmy Myers and Grey Rische each bounced back from first-set losses to win, adding some drama to the match. Both duos won in tiebreakers in the final set.

Nelson and Lippo, playing second doubles, dropped the first set 6-2, then won 6-2 and 10-7, overcoming a 7-1 deficit in the last set.

“Joey and Will stormed back in the second set after a slow start,” coach Ken Stange said. “In the final tiebreaker, they were down 1-7 before running off nine straight points to win 10-7.”

Myers and Rische lost 6-3, then rallied for 6-4, 10-6 wins.

“Jimmy and Grey played a closely contested match,” Stange said. “When they started their final tiebreaker, they were the last match on the court. Calm Grey and fiery Jimmy — it works fabulously.”

Joseph Wedekind and John McClarin fell in first doubles 6-3, 6-4.

In singles, Nick Etzell lost 6-2, 6-3; and Nile Lockwood lost 6-0, 6-0.

Overall, “it was a good match,” Ken Stange said.

“Our singles guys were overmatched, but Nick played quite well. He employed his game plan the whole way through. He’s getting better every day.

“Joseph and John came close. They just need to taste some victory.”

Coupeville (0-2) plays its first home match when it hosts Sequim (1-1) at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12.
