Wildcat grapplers play waiting game

Many returning lettermen still playing football

Just look up and down the Oak Harbor football team’s offensive and defensive lines and you’ll find the majority of the upper weight-class wrestlers that second-year head coach Mike Crebbin plans on using this season.

“I have most of the kids who will be wrestling at the lower weights out, but we are going to have to wait until the football season is over until we have everybody,” Crebbin said.

Despite losing eight seniors off last year’s team, Oak Harbor returns a number of quality wrestlers with experience including seniors David Wasickanin, Miles Hartt, Daniel Varn, Andrew Renninger, Matt Johnston and Edmondo Corralles.

Junior grapplers include T.J Elliott and Ben Llewelyn.

Among the talented underclassmen is sophomore Jake Daniels who wrestled at 103 pounds last year as a freshman, and will move up to the 119 to 125-pound weigh division this season.

“It’s pretty tough when you get young guys at the light weights and they have to go up against guys on other teams who have a lot of experience,” Crebbin said.

The Wildcats are stacked in the upper weight classes.

“I have three good heavyweight wrestlers, Varn, Corralles and Llewelyn, and I will drop one of them down to 215-pounds,” Crebbin said. “Johnston will wrestle at 189 pounds, Hartt at 169 and John Tuttle at 171 to 189 pounds.”

Crebbin said every team in the WesCo always has a full lineup of wrestlers, so a complete roster is a requirement.

Competition-wise, Lake Stevens will once again be the team to beat in the WesCo North.

“Lake Stevens always has five or six quality wrestlers every year,” Crebbin said.

“Marysville also has a good team and they have had a change of coaches this year, so we’ll see how they are. Everett was the top team in WesCo South last year, but now they are in our league. They are a 3A team, but they have a number of good wrestlers and Monroe’s program is on the rise.”

Crebbin said it’s going to be a cat fight for second place in the WesCo North.

“We are going to surprise some people,” he said. “We’re going to be coming out of nowhere and people don’t know who we have. Just look at the linemen on the football team and you see we have some talent. Now if I could get the linebackers to turn out, we’d definitely have a state championship team.”

Oak Harbor opens the season Dec. 1 at Lake Stevens, wrestling in a double dual meet with Mariner, Kamiak and the host team.

The Wildcats’ first home meet is against Arlington Dec. 12.
