“The Girls U-15 Whidbey Islanders requalified to play Division I, the highest level of youth soccer play in the state of Washington, during a tournament earlier this month in Yakima. The Islanders played the Kitsap Lightning to a 0-0 tie at the end of the 80 minute regulation and a 30 minute overtime. The Islanders had 25 shots on goal but were unable to put the ball away. The game went into a shootout, with the Lightening winning 2-0. In the second game, after putting 18 shots on goal against the North Seattle Relentless, the Islanders finally broke the scoring drought when Hazel Sapida drove the ball through several Relentless defenders to bury the ball in the net. Gretyl Pruss and Claudia Gil-Osorio with a Pruss assist followed with two more goals to take the game 3-1. The next day, the Islanders again battled the Kitsap Lightning. Both teams pounded the goal but Pruss was the only player to put the ball past the keeper to give the Islanders the 1-0 win. Goalkeeper Allyson Riggs stopped seven shots to earn the shutout. Outstanding defensive play came from Stephanie Black, Kaylea Kingma and Meghan Rauckhorst.Team members who all played during each game of the tournament included Stephanie Black, Siri Campbell, Christine Cobb, Kristin Crandall, Chelsea Daoust, Claudia Gil-Osorio, Kari Goebel, Kaylea Kingma, Tina Nicolas, Gretyl Pruss, Megan Rauckhorst, Allyson Riggs, Hazel Sapida, Kari Sherman, Lauren Shulock, Jennifer Villamarin, and Jennifer White.
