Central Whidbey residents will have the chance to question candidates for two principal positions in the Coupeville School District.

School officials are currently trying to find a new high school principal and a new elementary school principal. They have to move quickly to hire a qualified person but want enough time for the community to comment on potential candidates.

“We just have to be as expedient as possible without forcing the hires,” said Bill Myhr, superintendent of the Coupeville School District.

The first public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8, 6:30 p.m., at the Coupeville Middle School and High School Performing Arts Center. The meeting will provide a question-and-answer session with the candidates for the high school principal. The Coupeville School Board is scheduled to meet in executive session to discuss principal candidates during a special board meeting on Thursday, June 9, 8 p.m., at the Coupeville Elementary School conference room. When the board returns to open session, they may announce the new principal.

Residents will have a chance to see candidates for the elementary school principal 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 15, in the Performing Arts Center. The school board is scheduled to meet in an executive session after the meeting, at 9 p.m., to discuss the candidates. When the board returns to open session, they may announce the new elementary school principal.

The new principals will replace middle and high school principal Phyllis Textor, who is resigning at the end of the school year, and elementary school principal Glenda Merwine, who is becoming the school district’s new Director of Student Learning.

Myhr said the school district is still receiving applications for both principal positions. The school district has sent out 18 application packets for the high school position and 19 application packets for the elementary school position.
