If the Oak Harbor volleyball team stays at its current pace head coach Kerri Molitor will have to seriously watch her stress level this season.

The Wildcats pulled out their second straight comeback victory at home, beating Jackson 3-2 on Thursday night.

“I hope they don’t rely on doing that all season,” Molitor said.

Oak Harbor overcame two large obstacles for its second straight non-league win over a WesCo South opponent.

After losing their first two games against Jackson, 25-21 and 26-24, the Wildcats rallied to take the next two games, 25-23 and 25-14.

Forcing a sudden death fifth game, Oak Harbor fell behind by 10 points, before coming back one more time for a 15-12 victory and the match.

“Again, they rallied around each other,” Molitor said. “They never say die.”

Junior Ashley Kingma had an impressive 43 assists for the Wildcats, along with six serving aces.

Junior Jennifer Muzzall had 18 kills, followed by senior Heidi McNeill with 16 kills and three blocks.

Junior Miranda Thiel had a solid game all over the court, according to Molitor.

“She had a real consistent game in the front row and the back row,” she said.

Oak Harbor 3, Kamiak 1

Oak Harbor opened its season in exciting fashion Tuesday night, beating Kamiak in four games, 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 28-26.

After taking the first two games with ease, the Wildcats faltered in game three and nearly in game four.

“Each individual girl was letting the other’s mistakes affect how they played,” Molitor said. “Once they decided everybody needs to do their part, then they came together as a team.”

Down 24-19 and facing game point five times, Oak Harbor refused to give in. An ace by Kingma, a kill by junior Krystal Rousselle and three unforced errors tied the game at 24-24. Battling back and forth in overtime, the 6-foot-2 Muzzall put the game away, slamming one of her nine kills untouched into the Knights’ court.

“Man, they showed a lot of character coming back,” Molitor said. “I’m really proud of them.”

Thiel led Oak Harbor with 13 kills, followed by Rousselle and senior McNeill with 10.

Kingma had 26 digs, 27 assists and six aces.

“Kamiak, I think is a good team, so I feel real good about our home opening match,” Molitor said.

The Wildcats travel to Mountlake Terrace on Tuesday, before returning home for a match against Lynwood on Thursday, Sept. 16. The freshmen and junior varsity begin at 5:15 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
