No fish, snakes or hamsters were injured in an unusual traffic accident Thursday afternoon in Oak Harbor.
Brian Knoll, owner of Island Pet Center, was working among the small creatures and pet food when he was startled by a large noise at about 1:15 p.m. There was a car in his store, or at least it pushed a wall in a little ways.
Capt. Rick Wallace with the Oak Harbor Police said 94-year-old Mildred Eisenhauer of Coupeville accidentally crashed her 1991 Honda Accord into the building, causing substantial damage.
According to the police report, Eisenhauer didn’t know what happened. Police did not give her a citation.
Knoll, however, said the woman told him she was trying to park her car in the lot and accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. She propelled the car up and over the sidewalk and into the wall of the pet store.
The crash sent glass from a number of aquariums, as well as other rubble, flying across store, but no one was injured.
Knoll said it was fortunate that nobody was hit, especially since a steady stream of kids have been coming in the store and the next-door Dollar Power Store this week.
Knoll said the woman was remarkably calm about the incident. She told him that she was distracted, thinking about what kind of fish she would buy, when the accident occurred.
“She didn’t seem distraught,†he said. “I think I was more upset than she was.â€
The crash dented in the wall of the store and smashed a number of aquariums of all sizes. In all, $3,000 worth of aquariums were damaged. Luckily, none of the tanks had any fish or water in them.
Knoll said he doesn’t have an estimate of the total damage yet. The store, on Barlow Street, remains open.
None of the birds, rodents, lizards or any of the other pets seemed upset by the commotion.
