Officer made to feel at home

I’m a naval officer living in Whidbey, among many others, and want to share another example of how fantastic this community is to its service members.

Whidbey Golf and Country Club has a special military membership that recognizes our sometimes difficult lifestyles and need for flexibility. This, in itself, is enough to feel appreciated. I played my free round at the course to try it out and was paired with a local Oak Harbor man. I thoroughly enjoyed a great afternoon.

After experiencing the hospitality of the club, playing the course, and meeting the staff I was ready to join. I went in the following week and talked to Eric Schelling, club business manager, about joining. To my surprise, he told me the gentleman I played with had paid my application fee of $100 and thanked me for my service. The man didn’t ask to be named and I respect his modesty. More so, I was humbled by the gesture and his generosity. Since I’ve been playing at the club and socializing more with the locals I’ve seen even more of the same. I’ve been very impressed with a community that though surrounded by military has never taken us for granted.

I’m exceptionally proud to have served my country for the last eight years, and now I’m proud to be a member of the Whidbey community. Thanks to the people at the club, the generous member, and many of the like, this is the most “at home” I’ve felt since I left Chicago eight years ago. Thank you.
