“Passing, passing, passing. That, says Coupeville volleyball coach Kim Meche, will be essential if the Wolves are to serve, set and spike their way into district playoffs this year. For it to be a successful season, to make it into the post season, we need two key things, Meche said. Defensive play-blocking as well as passing and serve-receive passing. Some of those key elements are already in place, the coach added.I’m very confident in (senior) Emily Young as far as a setter, Meche said. She’s doing a great job getting the ball to our middle hitters. The Wolve’s middle hitters include senior Yasmeen Knox and junior Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby, two returning varsity players who are proven contributors.I feel real confident in those combinations, Meche said of the Young-Knox-Bagby troika. They’re hitting the ball like crazy and hard.Mix in outside hitters Tracy Taylor and Laura Young, both juniors, and Meche said the Wolves will have good leadership and experience going into the season. There are other weapons the Wolves will use to improve on last year’s 4-6 season, Meche said.Sophomores Jessica Boling and Lindsey Tucker worked their way up from the junior varsity onto the varsity and just need more experience under their belts, according to their coach. We’re also carrying some young girls who will get in there and get some experience, Meche added. And hopefully, by the end of the season, they’ll start contributing as far as coming off the bench and getting some kills. As for her expectations for the 2000 season, Meche is looking to reach the district playoffs, a trip requiring the Wolves to finish in the top four in their league. Chances of going on from districts improve once you get there, Meche said. But the getting there will be the hardest part.So far, she added, the team is earning nothing but passing grades. They come ready to practice … get along well as a group and they’re hard workers, Meche said. And I appreciate that. The Wolves open the season at home next Tuesday against Bellevue Christian. “
