Scholarship season has already started

Oak Harbor High School seniors Kimberly M. MacIndoe and Charlotte R. Milling have received two-year, $3,000 scholarships to pursue their education in Washington state. Nearly 300 high school seniors statewide were nominated by their principals to receive a Regents Scholarship. Every nominated student was automatically eligible to receive a two-year, $2,500 scholarship to WSU — that amount was later increased to $3,000 because of the achievements and potential of this group of students.

Their parents are Isidra and Daniel MacIndoe and Katherine and James Milling all of Oak Harbor.

Skagit Valley Chorale will begin rehearsals Jan. 8. The 130-voice chorale is seeking experienced tenors and basses for their spring concert, “A Choral Potpourri 2002.”

Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, corner of Hoag and LaVenture in Mount Vernon. Interested singers should contact chorale membership chair Bonnie Hansen at (360) 293-2800.

Eric Ode will be welcoming students and teachers back to Oak Harbor Christian School at a praise gathering at 9 a.m., Jan. 7. Ode’s presentation is 45 minutes long. He has been performing for schools since 1994. Donations are welcome.

Sylvia VandenHaak recently received another 2,000-plus hour pin from Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society to add to her collection. The pin was to recognize her years of knitting baby sets for the group.

Time is running out to apply for the 2002 Cmdr. William S. Stuhr Scholarship Fund for Military Sons and Daughters. These scholarships will be awarded in late May or June to high school seniors of active duty or retired military members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard stationed worldwide.

Each of the five scholarships being awarded is valued at $4,500, which will distributed equally over four years.

To be eligible, students: must be a 2002 high school senior; have a junior year and first half of senior year in the top 10 percent of his/her class; have a minimum SAT/ACT score of 1250/27; have evidence of extracurricular activities and demonstrated leadership potential;be a bona fide dependant of an active duty or retired military member; planning to attend a four-year accredited college
