Concrete used a punishing ground game to defeat the Coupeville High School football team 65-17 in a non-league contest Friday, Oct. 30, at waterlogged Mickey Clark Field.

The Wolves (1-5, 1-8) now prepare for a tie-breaking game with Chimacum (2-5, 2-7) at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Sequim.

Coupeville and Chimacum split during the regular season and tied for third in the Olympic League. The two clubs will play one half at Sequim to decide which school will move on to the district tournament Friday.

The winner earns a match at Cascade Christian, last year’s 1A state champion and this year’s sixth-ranked team, Friday.

If Coupeville loses, it will travel Friday to play another team that failed to qualify for the district tournament, Vashon Island.

Coupeville scored early against Concrete (4-3) when quarterback Gabe Eck linked up with Jordan Ford for a 46-yard score on a fourth-down play. Zane Bundy, who later kicked a 22-yard field goal, booted the extra point.

Coupeville’s only other score came on a 70-yard kickoff return by Lathom Kelley.

Everything else went Concrete’s way. The Lions piled up 30 points in the first quarter and 28 in the second.

“Our boys played hard last night,” coach Brett Smedley said. “It was our Senior Night and we went up against a very strong and physical Concrete team. We had a chance to make a lot of great plays and did, but we couldn’t stop Concrete’s offense.

“Our players kept fighting all game long, which has been the case all year long and something that I couldn’t be more proud of.”

Eck finished with 183 passing yards, hitting nine of 19 throws with one interception.

Ford, a senior, caught two passes for 67 yards; senior C.J. Smith added four catches for 39 yards; sophomore Hunter Smith grabbed two for 44 yards and senior Ryan Griggs one for 33.

Senior Mitchell Losey had the longest Coupeville running play of the evening, 20 yards, on the way to totally 48 yards on eight carries. Junior Jacob Martin ran for 40 yards on 10 carries, and senior Wiley Hesselgrave finished with 33 yards on five rushes.

Sophomore Julian Welling and Griggs led the defense with five tackles each. Griggs also caused and recovered a fumble.
