Coupeville marshals arrested a 14-year-old boy Monday in connection with an arson at Coupeville Middle and High School.
Students were evacuated from the school Monday afternoon after someone set a fire in a lavatory.
At approximately 1:40 p.m. someone entered a lavatory in the Annex building located near the corner of Terry and South Main Street. The teenager set two fires, one in a wastepaper basket and another on the counter near the sink.
“It charred up the wall and blackened the ceiling tile,” Superintendent Bill Myhr said.
In addition to smoke damage, a soap dispenser, mirror and some ceiling tile were also damaged.
Maintenance director Gary Smart used fire extinguishers to douse the blaze, Myhr said.
Once the fire alarm sounded, students in both the middle and high school were evacuated to the football practice field on Terry Road. The field is the designated evacuation area during construction of the new high school and auxiliary gym.
The students were out standing in their field for approximately 20 minutes.
The Coupeville Marshal’s Office is investigating the incident. Investigators were helped by the surveillance cameras placed outside the building and trained on the entrances.
Town Marshal Lenny Marlborough said the tape identified the student who was arrested along with a witness officers interviewed about the fire. He said the suspect will likely be charged with first degree arson, saying it’s very serious when someone sets a fire in an occupied school building.
He said the cameras, which were installed about a year ago, have been instrumental in solving a number of crimes at the high school. He commended the school board for authorizing the cameras’ installation.
Monday’s arson comes less than a week after Coupeville Elementary School was locked down. Officials locked down the school for about a half hour Jan. 31 after plumbers heard what sounded like gunshots coming from the woods located between the school and Ebey Road.
