While most students walk, take the bus or get a ride, one Oak Harbor High School student arrived in style on the first day of school.
Freshman Ally McElhiney got a ride in a 31-foot, 10-passenger limousine.
She earned the trip because she was the grand prize winner of the Oak Harbor Library’s teen summer reading contest. To qualify for the contest, teens had to read a minimum of eight books and write a review for each one.
She said she read between 15 and 20 books. She enjoys reading the Harry Potter series and Eyewitness books. She also enjoys reading about Japan and she’s a fan of Japanese-style comic books.
The students who achieved the eight-book mark qualified for the drawing for the limousine ride.
The limousine picked up several of McElhiney’s friends to accompany her on the ride. Joining her were fellow freshmen Jillian Rivera, Judith Landingin and Erin Buch. The limousine dropped the new high school students in front of the field house.
The limousine ride was provided by Oak Harbor based AAA Limousines.
Co-owner Ray Ladwig said this is the sixth year the business has driven the winner to school on the first day of class. He added he has transported fund-raising winners at other schools as well.
