Taser ends hostage case

Man held estranged wife with knife

An Oak Harbor police officer resolved a brief hostage situation involving a knife-wielding suspect Monday by kicking open a door and shooting the man with a Taser gun.

The suspect, 27-year-old Robert Wimmer of Oak Harbor, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping and assault in the second degree. He’s being held in Island County jail on $500,000 bail.

Capt. Rick Wallace with the Oak Harbor Police said the incident began when a neighbor of the SW Kaleeton Loop apartment building, which is off Barrington Drive, saw a man dragging a screaming woman into a home at about 10 a.m.

Officers Mike Clements and Dennis Dickinson responded to the scene. The officers heard a woman crying inside the apartment. At least one of the officers peeked inside and saw the man, later identified as Wimmer, holding a knife to the woman’s throat, Wallace said. The victim was his 23-year-old estranged wife.

Clements wrote in his report that he went to the front door while Dickinson went around back. Clements rang the doorbell and spoke to Wimmer through the door. The officer tried to talk him into letting the woman go, but he refused. Wimmer stated a number of times that he wanted to kill himself.

Dickinson, who was trying to rescue the woman through the back door, suddenly yelled “stuff it” and Clements kicked in the door with his gun drawn. The woman was an arm’s length away from Wimmer. The suspect was obviously stunned at the officer’s entrance and drew the knife up to his own neck.

Clements ordered Wimmer to put the knife down, but he refused and repeated, “I only want to kill myself.” After Officer Dickinson entered, Clements drew his Taser gun and shot Wimmer, who was immediately incapacitated. He dropped the knife and fell to the ground.

The woman was transported to the Navy hospital with minor injuries.

She told police that she was separated from Wimmer and in the process of finalizing their divorce. She said she had rented an apartment and kept the location secret from Wimmer, so she was surprised when he showed up at her home Monday morning. He forced his way in and refused to leave.

Wimmer pushed her to the floor and raped her, the report states. She fought him, but he punched her and grabbed her by the throat.

The woman later escaped through the front door, but Wimmer tackled her in the front yard. He choked her until she nearly lost consciousness and dragged her into the apartment, the report states. A neighbor woman who saw the struggled knocked on the door, but Wimmer didn’t open it. He told her everything was fine.

The victim later told police that Wimmer threatened to kill her and himself.

Wimmer found his wife’s apartment by getting “vague directions” from her roommate and then parking in the area and waiting until he saw her car, the report states.

Wallace said both Wimmer and the victim are in the Navy.
