Coupeville distance runner Kyle King was a double winner for the Wolves at the Cascade Conference championship meet May 9 and 11 at Cedarcrest.

The junior won the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:30.66 and came back to capture the gold medal in the grueling 3,200 meter event in of 9:36.93.

“We had some decent performances by our athletes at the meet and Kyle was just off the meet record in the 3,200,” coach Randy King said.

The current league record was set in 1978 by Coupeville’s Jeff Fielding.

“It was kind of neat Kyle making a run at that,” King said.

Kyle King has had a great 2007 season on the track and is the top ranked Class 1A runner in the state in both the 1,600 and 3,200 events.

“I didn’t do very good in the mile, I was about 10 seconds slower than I wanted to be,” he said. “I don’t know, it was a bad day for all the distance runners. The two mile went pretty good and I missed the league record by a second. That was a bummer.”

Also capturing a league title was junior Brian Miller in the javelin.

Miller, the fourth-ranked Class 1A javelin thrower in the state, threw the spear a distance of 163-2.

“Brian came through with a good throw in the javelin. He pretty much has led the league all year,” coach King said.

Steven McDonald placed third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.37 and Jake Weaver had two personal bests in the 110-and 300-meter hurdles with times of 16.85 and 46.63, respectively.

The 4×100 relay team finished fourth in a time of 49.47.

For the girls, senior Corrine Gaddis had the best individual finish, placing fourth in the long jump at 15 feet, 5.50 inches.

“I think I’ll have to PR to make the state,” Gaddis said. “Right now, my PR is 15-8, but I think I’ll need to jump 15-9 or 15-10.”

The girls 4×400 meter relay team of Kim Kisch, Gaddis, Chelsea Rosenkrance and Erin Hickey came in third at 4:23.17 and need to shave a little time if they want to go to the state meet.

“We think it’s totally doable,” Kisch said.

“We had a lot of personal records by our athletes,” King said.

“Alyssa Kelley’s shot put was her best by two feet, Erin Hickey’s discus throw of 101-6 was the best of her career and Jake Weaver’s times in both hurdle events were PRs.”

Hickey estimates she needs a discus throw of about 105 feet to reach the state.

“I went there last year and I’m working hard to make it back,” she said.

The next stop is the Class 1A Tri-district meet held which winds up today, May 19, at King’s High School.

The top 16 athletes in each event are competing in the Tri-district with the top four boys finishers and the top five girls advancing to the state meet.

Some of the teams in the Tri-district are made up of only girls and that is the reason more girls qualify.

“We could have as many as 10 athletes go to state, they are not that far away,” assistant coach Eric Lindberg said.
