Two Coupeville residents went to the hospital Friday morning after wrecking their vehicles on State Highway 20 just north of the Coupeville light.

David Engle, 78, was trying to cross the highway from South Ebey Road to Broadway Avenue in a Mercury sedan at about 9 a.m. when he pulled out in front of Jennifer Kastner, 46, according to officer reports.

She was driving northbound on the highway in a Jeep.

“He said he looked and didn’t see that car, but others behind it and pulled out,” said Washington State Patrol officer Dave Martin.

Kastner T-boned Engle’s vehicle on the passenger side, pushing the sedan off the road and onto an embankment, according to Martin. A stop sign was knocked down in the process.

Engle and Kastner both walked away from the scene on their own and were heading to the hospital.

Martin said Engle will be cited for failing to yield a right-of-way.

The intersection is a familiar one for emergency responders.

Deputy Bo Miller with the Coupeville Marshal’s Office said the troublesome intersection has had as many as three fatality accidents in one year.

According to news reports, Toni Chapman, 61, was killed at the same intersection while trying to cross as a pedestrian in November 2011. Chapman’s accident was reported as the fourth major accident at that intersection in 2011.

Everett Coffman was also killed in the same location in February 2010.

Ongoing accidents at the intersection prompted state officials to decrease the speed limit in the area to 45 mph and install flashing speed limit signs.
