A new student was named as student representative to the Coupeville School Board Monday.

The Coupeville School Board selected Marisa Etzell to the position being vacated by Heni Barnes.

“I’m willing to try something new,” Etzell said.

She is a junior at Coupeville High School where she has a 3.98 grade point average. In school, she is a founding member of the Leo Club, participated in the Science Olympiad and competes in track and soccer in which she has earned multiple letters.

She also is active in the community as well. She volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Gifts from the Heart Food Bank and Hearts and Hammers. She teaches Sunday School and is an aide for the Lions Club swim program.

Etzell has held a number of leadership positions including vice president of the Leo Club and she is also the vice president of the ASB. She participated in the North Cascades Institute’s Youth Leadership Adventure Summer Program and the Henry M. Jackson Leadership Conference.

During the Monday evening meeting, the school board members questioned Etzell about why she wanted to apply for the position, how she will serve students and her goals.

She learned about the position through her work as an office aide. She submitted a resume, cover letter, the recommendation letters from three teachers.

She said she’ll learn about student issues through talking with fellow classmates and communicating through social media.

When school board members asked if she could meet the commitment to attend the school board meetings, Etzell said she has the dates penciled in to her calendar.

“It’s just a pleasure to have you become a member of our board,” school board president Kathleen Anderson said during the meeting.
