Coupeville High School junior Christine Fields will go it alone on the golf course this year.
Fields’ brother Austin graduated last spring, leaving her as the only Wolf golfer. She will train with the South Whidbey High School team at the Useless Bay Golf and Country Club and follow the Falcons’ schedule.
Fields may be void of teammates, but she is not void of talent.
As a freshman she finished fourth in the district, seventh in the tri-district and eighth in the state 1A meet.
Last season she placed fifth at district, sixth at tri-district and 15th at state.
Her goals this year, she said, are to make the all-conference team for the third consecutive year and finish in the top 10 at state.
In regard to being the only Coupeville golfer, Fields said, “I miss out on a team concept, such as playing in team-only events and the feeling of contributing to something bigger than myself.”
However, being a one-person team, she said, allows her to “only focus on my game.”
“It makes it easy to practice and improve when I only have my schedule and feelings to deal with,” she added.
South Whidbey meets the Bush School Tuesday, March 18, at Jefferson Park.
