TV provides glimpse into high school life

Ever wonder what happens at Oak Harbor High School? You can soon find out by tuning to Channel 21.

That is the school district’s cable new television station that will begin broadcasting this month. The station will feature student-produced stories, video of school events and coverage of sporting events.

“There’s just a lot of cool people and things happening here that the community doesn’t know about,” said Chris Douthitt, video teacher at Oak Harbor High School. Approximately 140 students in several different classes are producing content that could be used for the station.

During a recent visit to a Broadcast Communication class, students were busy working on stories ranging from dancing to the local blood bank.

“I think it’s going to be awesome,” said junior Kaytie Henson about the prospect of having her work broadcast on television for the community to see. She added that it’s good to keep the community aware of student work.

She produced a feature about the blood bank. She thought it was an interesting story because so many people are involved with the important business of drawing blood.

Another student dedicated his time working on a presentation for the Veterans Day assembly. He spent the class period sifting through photos of World War II.

The thought of having his work appear in front of the community is making him scrutinize his work a bit more thoroughly.

“It makes me analyze my work more than ever,” said senior Matt Williams. The broadcast communication class is helping him lay a foundation for the future. He is enlisting in the Navy where he hopes to work as a journalist.
