The Coupeville High School softball team scored in more innings than host Chimacum Monday, May 2, but the Cowboys put up much bigger numbers during their rallies.
Chimacum won 14-4, securing the game with eight runs in the fifth inning. The Cowboys (7-0, 11-4) remained unbeaten in conference play, while the Wolves dropped to 3-5 (8-8).
The game was close until the bottom of the fifth. The Wolves scored in the top half to cut their deficit to 6-4, then Chimacum erupted by taking advantage of five walks.
“The score is definitely not a good representation of how we played,” Coupeville coach Kevin McGranahan said, noting the game was tight until the fifth.
Coupeville scored single runs in the first and second innings and had the opportunity to do more damage but left the bases loaded each time.
The Wolves also scored runs in the third and fifth innings, stranding two more in those at bats.
In the first inning, Coupeville’s first six batters all reached base but only one scored because two were cut down on the bases. A single by Katrina McGranahan and a triple by Sarah Wright produced the run.
Singles by Veronica Crownover, Hope Lodell and McGranahan resulted in a run in the second inning.
In the third and fifth innings, Kailey Kellner led off with walks and eventually scored.
Lodell, McGranahan and Wright all finished with two hits.
Wright began the game in the circle and was relieved by McGranahan.
Chimacum scored four runs in the first inning and two in the third.
Coupeville plays its last conference game at home at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, with Klahowya (4-2, 9-6). The game would normally be the traditional Senior Night, but Coupeville has no seniors on its roster. Therefore, the players decided to honor their fans and the community, according to coach McGranahan.
“It is a testament to the character this group of ladies has,” he said.
