Coupeville’s baseball season got off to a bumpy start on the peninsula Saturday afternoon.

Struggling with errors and hits, the Wolfpack dropped their non-league opener, 7-3, at 3A Sequim.

“We came out a bit tense and it showed early,” CHS head coach Willie Smith said.

Behind five defensive errors and early struggles at the plate, the Wolves surrendered seven unanswered runs by the top of the sixth inning.

“Offensively, we had the bases loaded twice and couldn’t get any runs across,” Smith said. “That was a bit frustrating…”

Coupeville, which out-hit Sequim 8-7, finally broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with three runs. The Wolves’ leading hitters were Alex Evans, who was 3-for-3, and James Smith, who was 1-for-4 with a double.

Evans pitched four innings and surrendered two runs before picking up the loss.

Coupeville got back to action yesterday during its first home game against 2A Port Townsend.

“I feel like we will be much better on Tuesday and the kids got their first game jitters out of the way,” Smith said.

The Wolves are on the road for their next two non-league games, before opening up the league season at 3:30 p.m., March 21 at home against Concrete.

•Note: The Coupeville girls fastpitch team started its season off Saturday with an 18-8 win over Sequim, followed by a 9-2 loss to Lakewood on Monday. No stats were reported for either game.
