Students can spend the summer studying

Oak Harbor High School is offering tuition-based summer school for students.

Principal Dwight Lundstrom said students can attend summer school and take a remedial class, improve a grade in a previous class or get ahead in their studies.

“It’s a great opportunity for our kids and staff,” Lundstrom said. “We think that will be a positive for our school.”

A variety of classes will be available at the high school including Pacific Northwest History, U.S. History, Algebra and Geometry. Classes are available to current students and the incoming freshman class.

The classes begin in late June after the regular school year ends. Courses will be staggered throughout the summer and last four to six weeks. Students completing a summer school course at the high school earn half a credit.

In previous years the only summer school courses students could take were at Midway High School. Those are more of an online class for students and the results were mixed, Lundstrom said.

Even though the Oak Harbor School District is budgeting $30,000 in Student Achievement Act money and Title I money to help subsidize summer school, tuition will be charged to high school students. They will have to pay $100 per class.

Lundstrom said the tuition is needed to help pay for supplies and salaries for teachers. Without the state and federal funding, student tuition would have been higher, Lundstrom said.

The elementary schools and middle schools are also offering summer school for students. There is no charge for these classes, which are designed to help students prepare for the next year.

“We’re giving kids a good head start on the next school year,” said David Peterson, assistant superintendent for the Oak Harbor School District.

Oak Harbor Middle School is offering summer school for all middle school students. They can take courses in reading, writing and math, which are three subjects of the WASL, which seventh graders take each year.

Elementary school summer school begins in August so students can take classes shortly before the beginning of the next school year. The elementary school classes last three hours a day.

Peterson said each school is conducting its own summer school. Officials have identified students who will be invited to attend summer school.

In addition to class, the libraries will also be open to encourage students to read over the summer.

Summer school at the elementary schools is funded by $90,000 worth of Student Achievement Act money and Title I money. Summer school at the middle school costs the school district $30,000.

Students at the middle schools and elementary schools won’t pay tuition to attend summer school.

Overall, the Oak Harbor School District is paying $150,000 to provide summer school to its students.
