Athletes having to rush to the nearest bathroom between their races is never a good sign.

Unfortunately for the Oak Harbor boys swim team, feeling sick was a common theme during Thursday’s 97-73 loss to Everett.

“I was missing one and I had four that were green after their races,” OHHS head coach Erika Miller said. “I’ve had sinus problems, stomach flu — despite all that they swam well.”

Oak Harbor struggled in races it normally would have excelled in, but the Wildcats did come away with two first place finishes in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays, along with a first place from Cameron Spence in the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Spence, Russell Chesnut, Evan Wilson and Brian Hall swam a 2:05.47. The time was significantly slower than what Miller feels capable, but she was pleased they were able to overcome illness.

“We won that by over five seconds so that was a solid win for them,” she said.

The team will need to shave nearly eight seconds off in order to reach the state qualifying time of 1:57.74.

“If we can’t get in here soon, we can probably get it in districts,” Miller said.

Other top finishers for Oak Harbor included Alec Tsyvetayev, who took second in the 100 breast and Aaron Ridle, who finished second in 100 backstroke.

Oak Harbor, now 1-2 in the WesCo North and 5-3 overall, has its next meet Tuesday, Jan. 18 at Lake Stevens.
