Jim Kotschwar, president of the Island Thrift board of directors, on Tuesday presented the check and contract to Mayor Patty Cohen at City Hall.In addition, the Kiwanis Club of Oak Harbor is involved in a fund-raising effort to furnish the facility. An interior designer, a landscaper and a construction manager have also offered their time and talents, said Bridget DeMuth, director of senior services.The senior services adult day-care center has been operating for the past seven years in the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, 1253 NW 2nd Ave. Care has been provided three days per week for five hours per day.The new building will allow for expanded services to cover five days per week, Monday through Friday, eight hours per day. It will accommodate 25 to 30 program participants at any given time, and is expected to have as many as 40 people enrolled.The adult day-care center provides respite to frail and aged men and women – such as those affected by developmental delays, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or the effects of stroke – who are unable to remain at home alone while family members or caregivers must go to work or elsewhere. This kind of care makes it possible for program participants to live at home with family instead of entering a more institutionalized care facility.The new building is a triple-wide modular structure and it will be located at 913 E. Whidbey Ave., between the senior center and the fire station. It is expected to open early in the fall. “
