The Oak Harbor Youth Football Panthers used a strong running game behind a big offensive line to win the North Cascade Youth Football League midget (9-10 year-old) title, 33-12, over Arlington in Mount Vernon on Saturday.
The Panthers’ offensive line, which weighs in excess of 627 pounds, opened up huge holes all day long for the running backs.
Gabe McKenzie, Jamacio Webster and Orlando Stoneham all benefited with 100-yard games. McKenzie and Webster both had rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Jordan Oliver (3-of-10, 58 yards) had a 25-yard TD pass to Dane Herron and two rushing scores of his own.
Travis Weeks added a run for an extra point and Frank Grecco kicked a PAT.
Defensively the Panthers shut Arlington down, holding them to just 89 yards of total offense.
Hunter Carlson, Ty Welshans, Sean Higgins, Fred Webster and Grecco provided pressure all day long. According to coach Gerry Oliver, Avery Murry provided the hit of the day.
Bobcats 22, Blue cubs 14
The Oak Harbor Bobcats’ season came to a storybook ending on Saturday in an exciting, 22-14, double-overtime championship victory over the Sedro-Woolley Blue Cubs.
The win avenged a 19-0 regular season loss and gave the Bobcats the pee wee (7-8 year-old) title.
Going into the fourth quarter trailing 6-0, the Bobcats put together a solid drive that was capped off by a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Blaine Coleman. The extra point was missed and the game went into overtime.
A touchdown on fourth-and-seven from Bryce Hill and two-point kick from Mike Laningham answered Sedro-Woolley’s first score.
The Bobcats then took the lead in the first stanza of the second overtime on a touchdown run from Kayla Miracle and another kick from Laningham.
The Blue Cubs, who hadn’t trailed all season, couldn’t score against the Bobcat defense on their final attempt.
